He was married to Emperor Haile Selassie's eldest daughter Princess Romanework, and was the father of four sons by her. Dejazmatch Beyene Merid commanded forces in Bale against the Italian occupation, but was captured and executed by the fascist forces in 1937. His wife Princess Romanework was captured and taken captive to Italy and kept prisoner there with her children. She would die in a hospital in Turin in 1939.
